Nissan North America Product Blitz Continues With All-New Sentra Sedan Coming Later This Year

On the heels of the Beijing Motor Show, at which Nissan Motor Company unveiled an all-new global sedan, Nissan North America (NNA) announced that this new model will be the basis for an all-new 2013 Nissan Sentra. In conjunction with the announcement, Nissan released teaser video clips and images of the North American market's uniquely styled 2013 Sentra SR. The all-new Sentra will be unveiled in the United States later this summer and go on sale in the fall.

"Sentra is the third of five all-new core models we'll be introducing in a 15-month product onslaught," said Brian Carolin, senior vice president, Sales and Marketing, NNA. "The all-new Altima goes on sale this summer and will be followed closely by the all-new Pathfinder and Sentra. And when the next two new models launch in 2013, we will have refreshed 75 percent of our volume, rewarding our loyal owners and attracting new customers into Nissan showrooms."

The all-new 2013 Sentra will be launched as the nameplate celebrates its 30th anniversary in the U.S., promising to bring a new level of refinement and innovation to the segment. Nissan will unveil the Sentra and release more details about it this summer

Nissan DeltaWing Passes First Full Wet Test

The experimental Nissan DeltaWing prototype sportscar kicked off its European testing program in England at Snetterton, in Norfolk, yesterday with Scotsman Marino Franchitti and German Michael Krumm getting the opportunity to sample the car in wet conditions.

Steady rain throughout the morning enabled the team to undertake wet weather development with tire partner, Michelin, with the hugely innovative 1.6-liter Nissan DIG-T turbo-powered car.

The Nissan DeltaWing features half the weight, half the horsepower and half the aerodymamic drag of a traditional Le Mans sportscar - with front tires that are only four inches wide.

With the famous Le Mans 24 Hours just two months away, the Nissan DeltaWing team gained valuable information about the ground-breaking car's performance in typical European track conditions, having conducted all of its development work so far in America.

Darren Cox, General Manager Nissan in Europe, said: "The whole Nissan DeltaWing team is still on a massive learning curve. Testing in the States was a stable, predictable way of doing the initial groundwork but this exciting car is going to be racing in the French countryside. Today, the whole team got a taste of the conditions they may well face on June 16/17, so it may not have been much fun in the Norfolk rain, but it's about the best thing that could have happened for a project and a car that will face an enormous challenge just to make the end of the race."

Franchitti conducted most of the morning running in conditions that ranged from damp to extremely wet weather - gathering valuable data as to how the car performs. Having only previously conducted some brief wet track running on an artificially damp track at Sebring, with the help of a water truck, today's on-track action was an important step in the development of the wet tires for the car.

Michael Krumm climbed aboard for much of the afternoon running - enjoying drier conditions as the team worked on suspension adjustments, braking and gearbox improvements.

The Nissan DeltaWing will make its debut at this year's Le Mans 24 Hours. Nissan's involvement in the program was announced in March, with the manufacturer not only providing the engine, but additional technical resources for the car's debut.

Designed by Ben Bowlby, the DeltaWing partnership brings together some of the biggest names in North American motorsport, including project managing partner and American Le Mans Series founder, Don Panoz; racing legend and Nissan DeltaWing constructor, Dan Gurney's All American Racers organization along with Le Mans entrant, Duncan Dayton's Highcroft Racing.

Nissan DeltaWing Development Film Series Kicks Off

With European testing due to kick off next week for the Nissan DeltaWing, a new online film series highlighting the development of the revolutionary Le Mans 24 Hours entry was launched today.

Commissioned by Nissan and hosted at the Nissan in Europe YouTube page, the multi-part series will highlight different aspects of the car's development and show the challenges of getting such an innovative project to its current stage and the huge task the team faces to finish the Le Mans 24 hours.

As it did with its similarly innovative Juke-R project, Nissan is breaking new ground in the way it makes the development process behind its highest-profile campaigns as accessible as possible.

New episodes of the film series will be launched roughly every two weeks between now and Le Mans and will culminate in a TV documentary, which will air after the endurance classic in June.

A Nissan film crew has followed the development of the unique racer, filming every move of Nissan DeltaWing designer Ben Bowlby and his engineering team as they have built the car, as well as recording how Nissan's 1.6-liter DIG-T engine has been developed to be the ideal partner engine for the project.

When the car races at Le Mans it will be thanks to a number of key partners in the project. In addition to Nissan and Bowlby, project managing partner Don Panoz has been key to the car's development, Dan Gurney and his All-American Racers organization has built the prototype car in California and Duncan Dayton's Highcroft Racing outfit and Michelin have also been heavily involved.

The first video in the series highlights the wind tunnel work on the car, carried out at the Windshear facility in Charlotte, North Carolina.

Ben Bowlby said: "We've had the Nissan film crew following our every move throughout the development of the car over the past few months and this will give the fans a great insight into the creation of the Nissan DeltaWing.

"It was a bit strange at first to have a camera poked under our nose all the time but, after a while, the guys really felt like part of the team.

"The finished product will be brilliant for the fans to get to see what goes on behind the scenes in the creation a project as unique as the Nissan DeltaWing.

"The wind tunnel work in particular was a key component of the project. The data we had from the scale model development and what our computer simulations told us showed we were moving in the right direction.

"Getting the full-sized car in the wind tunnel really cemented that. In fact, the final results actually exceeded our expectations."

Nissan want to make this exciting part of the sport accessible. These films will give some insight into the very steep learning curve the team faces to even get to the Le Mans 24 Hours."

The Media Center interviewed Dutch Mandel!

On the last press day ahead of the public events at the New York International auto show, the Media Center interviewed Dutch Mandel, associate publisher and editorial director of AutoWeek magazine, to see what consumers have in store as they enter the show this week.

Vehicle connectivity, applied with common sense, fuel efficiency and sustainability, were trends noticed by Mandel during the opening days of the show. He also pointed out the general increases in horsepower and more fuel efficiency, a "wonderful dichotomy for consumers."

Nissan Vehicle Entertainment Systems to Include Intel Chips

Nissan Motor Co. (7201)’s vehicles will use Intel Corp. (INTC) (INTC) microprocessors for in-car information and entertainment systems starting next year, helping the largest chipmaker lessen its reliance on sales to computer makers.

Nissan, Japan’s second-largest automaker, presented an Infiniti LE concept car at the New York International Auto Show today that includes a dual-screen display powered by Intel’s Atom chip.

Intel Chief Executive Officer Paul Otellini has identified the auto industry as an opportunity to diversify beyond the personal computer business, which now accounts for more than 90 percent (INTC) of revenue. Intel, which also has deals with Daimler AG and Bayerische Motoren Werke AG, is trying to persuade more carmakers that enhanced computing functions can woo consumers.

“The industry is in the middle of this very significant transition to bring much richer connectivity into the vehicle,” Ton Steenman, vice president of Intel’s intelligent systems group, said in the statement. “We are beyond the pivot point of this becoming a significant business.”

Intel will help speed the introduction of consumer electronics functions in vehicles, Andy Palmer, Nissan’s executive vice president in charge of Infiniti, said in the statement. - Courtesy of Business Week

Nissan Taxi Of Tomorrow Makes World Debut!

Starting today, the first full vehicle prototype of the Taxi of Tomorrow can be seen by drivers, passengers and owners.
